Valeria, a single mother of two, was determined to create a better future for her family. She had always been a hard worker and took the initiative to earn her Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Business Management – Accounting, hoping it would lead to stable employment. However, despite her qualifications and dedication, she struggled to find a full-time job. Every application was met with rejection or requests for more experience, making it difficult to get her foot in the door. She had the skills, the determination, and the willingness to work she just needed an opportunity.
That opportunity came through CRF funding. With the support of workforce programs made possible by CRF dollars, Valeria was connected with CPA Balance Group. They recognized her potential and gave her the chance to prove herself as an administrative assistant. With full-time employment, she was finally able to achieve the financial stability she had been working toward. Now, Valeria is thriving in her role, gaining valuable experience, building her confidence, and creating a secure future for her children.
Her journey is a powerful example of how access to workforce development programs can transform lives. Valeria didn’t lack motivation or capability, she simply needed someone to open the door. CRF funding made that possible. Stories like hers highlight the importance of continued investment in these programs, ensuring that individuals who are ready and willing to work get the opportunities they deserve.
Lorena– The $1,000 incentive has had a profound impact on Lorena’s life. As a single mother of four, she has faced significant challenges, particularly as her daughter battles a brain tumor. Managing frequent hospital visits to Children’s Hospital while striving to stay on track with her personal and professional goals has been exceptionally difficult.
During this time, Lorena’s daughter underwent brain surgery and is now in recovery. The financial support provided by the incentive has been instrumental in helping Lorena maintain essential medical appointments for her daughter while continuing to pursue her own aspirations. Despite the demands of her situation, she remained committed to her progress, adjusting her goals as needed while spending extensive time in the hospital. Remarkably, she successfully earned her High School Diploma (HSD) during this challenging period and is now preparing to enroll in college.
Lorena’s ultimate goal is to become a nurse. She has been diligently working toward her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential, having completed all required coursework. Her credential is currently pending with the Department of Health (DOH), with only the final testing requirement remaining.
This financial support has provided Lorena with much-needed relief, enabling her to navigate this difficult time with greater stability while focusing on both her family’s well-being and her long-term career aspirations.
U Pay Less Auto Glass
Josue Leal, owner of U Payless Auto Glass in Pasco, faced significant hardships in 2024 due to the Lewis Street Bridge closure, which disrupted access to his business and resulted in financial struggles. During this time, he was unable to invest in the latest radar calibration system, a critical tool needed to remain competitive in his industry.
Recognizing this challenge, Business Service Navigators re-engaged with Josue to develop a plan for assistance through the CRF. Legacy Barber
Jay Felix, owner of Legacy Barbershop and Academy, is committed to being a pillar of his community. His business not only provides top-tier barbering services but also offers training opportunities for those looking to enter the profession. Wanting to create real opportunities for WorkSource participants, Jay partnered with the CRF Business Navigators to become an approved ITA provider, allowing his school to train the next generation of barbers.
Through this collaboration, the CRF provided financial assistance for a promising EcSA-enrolled participant to attend the barbering academy, covering their training costs. In addition, with the recognition that hands-on experience is critical, Jay has agreed to provide the participant with a paid internship at his barbershop upon completion of the program. This partnership demonstrates the direct impact the CRF has in creating pathways for workforce development—ensuring that businesses gain skilled employees while individuals gain invaluable experience and career opportunities.

Taxes D Notary
During the July-September quarter, Business Navigators had the privilege of assisting Taxes D and Notary, a tax preparation service with a strong focus on serving the Spanish-speaking community. This minority- and women-owned business, led by Diana Gomez, sought our assistance in securing training and certification opportunities for herself and one of her employees.
With the support of the Community Reinvestment Fund (CRF), Diana and her employee were able to attend the IRS Tax Forum in Dallas, Texas, where they obtained critical course certifications that would allow them to take on more complex cases. In addition, they completed the Bilingual Federal Tax Pro Course, expanding the range of services they can offer their community. Moreover, they are set to attend the National Society of Tax Professionals Seminar in San Antonio, Texas on October 28, 2024, where they will gain the credentials needed to represent taxpayers before the IRS, further elevating their professional standing and expanding their business capabilities.
The importance of a business like Diana’s in the Spanish-speaking and broader minority community is vital. Diana provides a trusted service to individuals who often find interactions with the IRS intimidating, especially when language barriers are present. Her ability to relate to their unique socio-economic challenges creates a space of safety and trust for her clients, further cementing her role as an indispensable resource for underserved populations.
Additionally, this quarter marked a significant milestone as staff successfully connected our first EcSA-enrolled participant with a CRF-involved business. Nick Reyes, a TC Futures participant, who had received support through both the EcSA programs and the CRF incentive program, secured employment with Alcon Media, a local radio station known for its commitment to social justice and community engagement. Nick was hired as a Marketing Specialist, a role perfectly aligned with his career focus in media marketing. This is a prime example of how the CRF has had a profound and lasting impact by providing opportunities for both businesses and individuals within the community.
These stories are just two examples of the acute and lasting effects that the CRF has had in strengthening the workforce and empowering minority-owned businesses in our region.
