Our M.A.D.D. (Make A Difference Day) at Pine Meadow Farm Center was incredible! The weather was absolutely perfect. There were seven staff signed up for the morning shift and nine for the afternoon. It was just a short 10-minute drive from downtown Spokane. First off, in the morning Chrys Ostrander, Executive Director and Farm Manager gave us a tour of the farm facilities. We were shown the one-acre market garden consisting of 52 permanent beds, two greenhouses with a third under currently construction, a herd of dairy goats, a flock of chickens, a large new raspberry patch, a small but growing orchard, a 10-acre hay field, 5 acre goat pasture, a 7-acre forest and a good deal of open land. The farm also has two earth berm homes, an office, barn, and sheds.
The majority of our morning was spent weeding the raspberry patch and market gardens. In the afternoon, we filled seed trays with their own farm made soil, moved seed trays into greenhouses, and transplanted seedlings into pots. Chrys was very surprised and grateful for the monetary donation that Career Path Services made. We all worked hard and took home our fair share of dirt and sun.
